Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute has successfully organized a 10 day training programme on “Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer Technology in Sheep’’ for veterinary officers of Jammu from 14.5.2013 to 23.5.2013. The training was sponsored by Directorate of Sheep Husbandry, Jammu, Government of Jammu & Kashmir. AI and ETT are two reproductive technologies that have been used extensively worldwide for genetic improvement of low producing animals, as well as for faster multiplication, ex situ conservation and international exchange of superior germplasm.
During this programme the participants were given hands-on practical training in various aspects such as semen collection using artificial vagina, subjective and objective semen evaluation, dilutor preparation, semen preservation, semen freezing and artificial insemination in the farmer’s flock, oestrus synchronization using vaginal sponges, superovulation protocol, preparation of animals for laparoscopy and laparotomy, laparoscopy for ovarian response of donor and recipient as well as embryo transfer in recipient, laparotomy for surgical embryo collection, flushing of uterine horns, embryo searching and grading. Fixed time AI was performed in 45 ewes by the trainees in field. The oestrous in ewes of farmers was synchronized using indigenously developed sponges. The trainees expressed their confidence over the use of AI and ETT for the improvement in sheep production in Jammu & Kashmir.
