BackProducts Developed from Underutilized Non-Textile Grade Coarse Wool
In the country, about 50% of wool produced is belonging to coarse quality with micron >40 in diameter. Medium-coarse and coarse wool has been utilized to certain extent in the country for the preparation of handicrafts and namda for the past several years. However, Coarse wool is not fully utilized in many of wool producing states like Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Coarse wool is difficult to spin due to its large diameter, high bending rigidity and torsional rigidity. In order to mitigate this problem, institute has initiated research programs to maximize the use of coarse wool by process modifications and untapped technologies. Various products are developed using braiding and sliver felting methods: Turquoise woven footmat, Winter baby bed, Striped door mat, Embroidered bolster cushion, Elliptical bath mat, Braided yarns and Wool felt balls.
